The bearings in my Crossride freehub body are knackered, LBS having difficulty sourcing new one. Apparently, Mavic are not using a UK importer anymore or summink making spares a bugger to get hold of.
Anyone know where I can get a new freehub body that doesn't involve crossing the Channel!!! Ta
I thorght Mavic had a new service center in the UK now (http://www.mavic.com/mtb/services/msc.aspx) which any shop should be able to contact to get spares
Last year I got spokes through by LBS in about a week from mavic, I asked about bearings and was told about the same lead time. Cost wise I was told about £20, so not sure where £50 came from, unless its the whole hub you want?
What's wrong with it? Sticking as usual? It probably just needs stripping, cleaning and lubing. If the bearings are the same as CrossMax bearings they're the same as roller blade bearings and can be changed with tools most people have in their garage.
Sorry this is in French but the pictures are so good you shouldn't need the text.
Got a fair bit of play in it, enough that my Xt cassette rocks a good few mm, which has been causing me the occasional gear slip under pressure. It doesn't seem to be sticking as such, my LBS reckon its bearings in the freehub, reckon they're a swine to source, hence me looking for a new freehub body.I can't understand why a new body would cost £40, when a whole rear wheel can be bought for £65ish, seems nutty!! Any ideas?
Ah, rocking, that's the bush at the back worn out on Crossmax but on yours I can't be sure as I've never had one to bits. If it is that the whole hub is scrap and you need a new wheel as repair isn't economic.
It's because it's specced with the M40952 (M10 road) freehub. If you don't fit a M10 cassette, you need a cassette spacer fitted to use regular (shimano / sram) cassettes. This can cause the cassette to wobble in some cases if it's just been replaced without the spacer.
It has a DU bearing on the inside of the body though, which requires regular lubrication with light oil to stave off wear.
When the DU is worn, it can cause mislignment of the pawls and ratchet assembly, as well as the chain and casette. The gear skipping could just as easily be the pawls not engaging correctly, as they have light action springs that can fatigue after a while.
It may be worth opening up to get a look at what's causing it before binning the wheel or buying a new FHB + pawls & springs.
Yeah apparently spacers are all present and correct! LBS says they could source a bearing match from a local commercial bearing supplier, but it would mean going without my steed for a week or so, they need to strip down the freehub and get a bearing number(?) Anyone know the number/type of bearings required pechance?....
Been really happy with my Crossrides up til now, great performance for the budget price, but if spares are gonna be a nightmare to get hold of, I kinda wish I'd gone for an XT/ 719 combo or summink
Hey Neil, thanks for the link! Can see Crossmax freehub on there, is it the same/compatible with the crossride hub then? Still £45 though... gulp!! Ta though!
Cheers for the offer of the spare hub mate, has it got any play in the freehub body though!! Only mine is a similar age, so as you say prob not got a huge amount of life in it, but I'll keep you posted if I get desperate!! TA
Changing just the bearing on the FHB won't stop it from oscillating once the DU is worn, it can't be replaced and the body is effectively dead. So that'll be a waste of time.
The Crossmax freehub is a different model (M40580) and is shorter, so it won't fit.
Contact info@skylinecycles.co.uk we've got a few M40952 bodies in stock, and can post one out for about £50.
In here looking for info, both me and a mate have Crossrides 18mth old hard use, and on both the freehub is noisy and has play in the cassette, looks like we have knackered freehubs then
Think i have play in a bearing too on the disk side, so Will probably get a new rear wheel, as freehub+bearings+labour is more than the rim is worth. Front bearings have gone too
Out of interest anyone know what size/spec the front bearing is (none mavic code), as i work with bearings so can probably source cheaper
After scouring the nation for a new freehub for less than £40+!!! I ended up finding one in one of my LBS for £24.99....result!! All fitted now and NO PLAY, haven't given it any stick out on the trails yet, but I'm optimistic that the problems solved....I hope!! Seems the spoke end of the freehub runs on a nylon bush rather than a bearing, which gets worn with time (and dirt!) creating the play I was experiencing, bit annoying, reckon regular removal/cleaning of the freehub body would help prolong its life....bit crap though really!!!! Cheers all for your input though
Oh.... Eddy, I almost gave up and went for a new rear wheel too, but CRC and the like dont seem to be doing them individually at the mo' out of stock apparently, could be to do with Mavic not having a UK importer, was Chickens, but think mavic are supplying direct now...good luck!!
