Can anyone anwser a question. I'm going to fit a set of Marzocchi Forks - Suspension MZ Comp 2008 to tide me over for a while. I have a Cane Creek Tank II Silver 1.1/8" A-Headset. The fork steerer looks tapered at the base. Can anyoone confirm they'll fit before i commit to fitting the.
I've just lowered the crown face onto the steerer stem, Very tight and an inch to go. Just hammer it on down?Haven't fitted one in a few years, so can't remember if thats normal.
Find a pipe that's a tad bigger than the steerer and use that to bash on. It shouldn't go tight until there are only 5mm to go. Take it to a bike shop if in doubt, they'll have the correct tool and won't charge much as it will only take them 30 seconds.
Are you sure you haven't got the top race and crown race mixed up? The top race has a smaller hole and may be split, or have a split cone shaped thing in it.
You may be doing what a mate did and confusing (as john said) the upper race thing with the crown race. cane creek headsets have the crownrace fairly wide with a rubber lip around the edge, and an angled bit sticking up in the middle that the bearing sits on, the split one goes on top of the upper bearing under the top cap & steerer, etc. My mate was trying to fit the upper race onto the fork thinking the actual crown race was just a seal that went on top of it before the bearing.
Tank headsets are Cane Creek's version of the FSA Pig. They have 1/4" bearings in the bottom, and 5/32 in the top. It's difficult to confuse the races, as the bottom one is so much bigger on the bearing surface contact area.
The race or steerer may be damaged, or on such a basic fork, the taper may be longer.
I have a tank headset, the most basic one, which has 3/16" bearings top and bottom, thought some of the ones above may have had cartridge. (there are three tank headsets iirc)
I only bought mine (£10) for using for fitting a 1 1/8" fork into a 1" frame, the original headset having 1/4" balls, so changing to 3/16" run in the original cups gives the required extra 1/8" for the 1 1/8" crown/upper race(s) tha sees. Not that you need to know this of course!
am new to this and have just bought second hand a pair of marzocchi bomber flylight 100 forks to put on my identiti dr jekll frame but when a got the forks they didnt have any bearing orr nothing with them and when a put them into my frame they wobble about its obvous thers bits missing but a dont no wot and were a can get them from can any1 please help
