Sunline Headset Question...
Gap between the thingy and the other bit

I've installed my headset...and by god I tried tightening it...I ripped out a star fangled nut trying to tighten it.

Anyway I can't get these gaps any smaller...and I'me worried about crap getting in.

Dont think there shoul be a gap, does the top cover fit flush without the bearing in?

It all fits flush without the bearings in, the bearings fit into the cups tight...I mean really tight.

Then there is a parallel spacer which fits between the steerer tube and the bearings and that was stupid tight! I took a file to get them to even get to work and then a hammer to push the steerer through.

Because both the top cap and the crown race thing move I expect a certain gap but that just seems too much gap.

That's the destructions but they don't show a 'how it should look' at the end....I knew I should have forked the extra £30 for a hope :-/

Relax BHB

Mine's exactly like that.. there's supposed to be a gap, I don't know why but there just is.

I too spent ages tightening my headset and then realised that the bars didn't turn and there was still a gap

Phew...

So how does it fare in the really gloopy stuff?

With a gap like that it looks like it would get mullered with just a heavy handed hosepipe!

Yeah I thought exactly that BHB but I can't say I've had any problems at all.. feels fine at the moment (have had it on since March /  April ish).

Cheers Dan, now I can go riding...I'm still wary though.

Might cut a strip of inner tube and cover the gap though.
Just bob a large o ring in.

Tried that...but because the two components move the o-ring gets twisted and rucked up

the thing is BHB -  if you stick a bit of inner tube over it you could end up trapping moisture in there ... bit like wot the sealskinz shock covers do

BHB, I suggest rolling your rubber on for the ride, then rolling it off afterwards to let the wet out.

And don't forget to use lubricant, or it will tend to bend off to one side if you let go with both hands.

Exactly what I was thinking!
