Hi there.

I have an on going problem and wonder if anyone has the anwser. I've been trying to get my gear running smooth, and had success in the garage, until i rode it for the first time. Again shifting problems and nothing i seem to do fixes this. Before the problem started my rear mech hanger snapped and i had to do a single speed conversion out on a trail to get me home.

Got home, got new hanger went to refit and couldn't find the old piece of chain removed to when i did the first aid repair. (left it on the ground next to my multitool - bugger) So proceeded to use a section of old chain, i say old but only 6 monthsish to bridge the gap.

I've now brought a new chain, Shimano HG73 and am wondering whether my gear problems are to do with my chain length being incorrect?

How do i know how long it should be?

If only i had picked up the old bits.

Spec of drivetrain is below if this makes a difference. Any help greatfully recieved.

GIANT TRANCE 2 2007 - Medium

Rear Mech - Shimano XT top normal

Cassette - SRAM PG950 11-34

Crank set - RaceFace Ride XC 44/32/22

Chain - Shimano HG73

I'd suspect the alignement of your mech hanger or the adjustment of the derailleur 'b' screw rather than chain length.

ok

put the chain on biggest on the chainset, smallest on the cassette and feed through the rear mech.

When you pull the chain through so both ends meet, look at the angle of the rear mech.

If you were to draw a line through the 2 pulley bolts and it is perpendicular to the ground, then you have pretty much got the right chain length.

Also check your cassette, when fitting a new chain general advise is to change that too, they wear together with a chain so may slip with the new chain.

Make sure the teeth on the smallest cog have a similar shape to those on the largest.

Easiest way is to wrap it around your largest cog back and largest chain ring and add 2 links.

Check your chain link plates are not twisted.
check your chain link plates are not tight.
when on small ring front and small ring rear with your pulleys near as horizontal your chain should just about clear your top pulley giving correct chain length (this way there is not as much pull on the chain from rear mech spring)
