Getting my first new bike in over 8 years so need some advice (my current bike has reached the end of its economic life span). I will be getting this via the cycle to work scheme but am still looking for something within the price range £500 - £800. Bike will be mainly used for commuting but also some easy off-roading & hopefully some trekking on rough paths (e.g deer stalker paths like you might find in Scotland - I live in Glasgow).
I am not limited to any particular shop or model. All advice welcome.
On ones are good, the inbreds have rack mounts and they do a 29 inch version, perfect with slicks for commuting and what ever off road you would like to take it on.
Thanks though I have to admit to being pretty ignorant about bike bits & pieces so selecting the various components is fairly intimidating and the basic price is at the upper edge of my price range.
I have been looking at previous treads here. Whats the opinion on the Commensal Combi Deluxe which can be bought for £630 online
Now't wrong with the Malt frames and Merlin do very good value build ups. I'd go for one of these over the Commencal. But that's just my choice. I'm sure there are others who'd say to go the other way, especially as Commencal are 'cool' now
Cool don't matter to me as my lack of bike knowledge stretches to whats trendy, and no-one else cycles at work anyway so I could turn up on a penny-farthing and tell them its the latest fashion.
Don't discount the likes of Specialized, Trek, Giant, Marin either - they all offer good value bikes around that price (especially Specialized and Giant)..
If your main thing is the commuting along with not too techical off-road, then how about the Cotic Roadrat? That can be fitted with 29er rims and then you can have slicks or nobblies. I hear Cy Turner has done some quite serious trails on his Roadrat.
