Did a road ride to Scarborough yesterday, I normally go quiet back roads but needed to get there pretty quickly so took pretty much A roads all the way there. My journey started badly when I witnessed a fluffly little squirrel get squished about 30 secs into my ride.
Over the whole ride though, I was really shocked. Dead rabbits, hares, a badger, numerous birds and a fox, what a mess that made with it's innards spattered across the roads. It was quite literally a trail of dead critters all the way.
Death to all (grey) squirrels i say!!! I hate the little bushy tailed rats...... My condolences go to the Rabbits, Badgers, Birds and Foxes though.....
If you want to see proper road kill, try driving from Adelaide to Darwin in Oz like we did years ago. Kangaroo carcasses all over the road which if you hit will pretty much end the journey there and then. We even saw a big dead cow on the road once!!!
There is a bloke in the Northern Territories whose job is to drive up and down all day clearing away the bodies!!! They get hit by the enormous Road Trains (big lorries with at least 3 trailers compared to the normal 1) with industrial strength Bull Bars and just left on the road for unsuspecting road cars to swerve in and out of. Keeps you alert though...!!
Well on a ride on Wednesday a stupid fluffy bunny rabbit ran out of a bush straight under my rear wheel. I was going about 20mph at the time so luckily it's death was swift. Was not a fun experience.
Years ago on the road bike and came a cross a hedgehog, crossing a busy road, somehow all the cars missed him, her, just about to walk into the road and saave him, her, when with a blareing of horn and flashing of lights a bastard truck driver splattered him all over me, and the road, had to ride into work covered in dead headge hog, blood and guts, not nice at all, oh and theyre covered in fleas.
Saddens me all the dead critters on the roads recently, seems to be many more than there used to be for some reason.
No Oil and Cars and maybe man kind sounds pretty good to me at the moment.
Sadly too date I've hit 1 cat saw him on the left thought ahhhh nice puddy, moved into the middle as no one around and he ran under my wheels and 1 badger moved onto the other side of the road, it was going left to right, reversed it's direction and straight under my wheel to. The Cats head was squished flat, atleast it was quick, someone woke up the next day to find there cat dead
I was shocked to have found a dead RED squirell the other day, aint seen one in years! And the poor little fcuker was dead
A while ago me and the other half were comming home after a day out. On turning into our street i could see a cat underneath a parked car walking out towards the road. I said to the missus 'watch that cat'.. next thing i knew she run over it
I said to the missus 'watch that cat'.. next thing i knew she run over it
your missus did the correct thing you shouldn't swerve to avoid small animals unless you have time to check its safe to manouver last thing you want to do is crash into something like a tree or oncoming car....
Witnessed an accident in Gilberdyke one lunch time a cat run into the road and a woman of a 4x4 swerved to avoid it and lost control demolished some pedestrian railings then a traffic light ripping the wheel off the 4x4 bet she won't swerve next time........
Drop the bloody speed limits*, and enforce them strictly, take away peoples electronic toys and make them pay sodding attention to the roads. I reckon then we'd see less roadkill and probably a good deal less in the way of car / human incidents as well.
*unless you're on the motorway in which case there is no reason at all not to have a 90mph limit. Well, aside from the fact most drivers would take that as an excuse to go 110mph.
Trying to avoid them confuses them, they have an angle on your speed and they adjust their movement for it, then you slow down, change course and wallop. Stick to your speed and line and you've less chance of hitting them. The faster the animal the more likely this is to work, so if you see a badger slow down as they don't do fast
