That looks pretty naff to me, like it would blow away in a slight breeze. I got one of these, it's aimed at bike tourers and is very sturdy indeed, I can erect it in less than five minutes.
I've got a RAB Bivi bag and various different sizes of sleeping bag I used to do Bivi Mountaineering going out for upto 3days, I tried years ago to train with the extra weight on my back and with the added MTB gear it wasn't manageable or in any way fun to me I popped my knee out did my back in which also didn't help.
Also I've found I can walk / scramble for 3 days 16hours per day easy, where as i can't ride more than 6-7hours in a day then barely able to ride the next day.
Then you get the Logistics of being possibly 50miles from the car what if you get a mechanical your in trouble or worst still a injury.
I've Bivi'd with a 4season sleeping bag ontop of BenNevis at nearing -20c in a white out, not going to say I had much of a choice in the subject at the time though.
Downsides being you can't cook in them and your face always gets wet but hey!!
I didn't - it's sitting in my sister's attic with a few bits (stem, seatpost, cranks, front rack & bags). Didn't see any point paying the excess to get it out here when I already had the Trek on site. If the Trek breaks I'll get the Inbred posted out, otherwise keep it there and build it up for a local trip next time I'm back in the motherland.
Sounds great. Sod trail centres I think I might give it a go on dartmoor. How much is a good bivvy? Never tried it
Had a couple of good bivvy trips on dartmoor. I use a Terra Nova Laser Competition tent - small enough, weighs about a kilo and a nicer alternative to a bivvy IMO
I have a slightly older version of this tent which is a bit under 2kg and did a few 2-3 day trips in scotland, my fave being up over wade's road from kinlochlevenand back down the cally canal and west highland way. Its great fun, and camping wild is great, especially when you can stop a little earlier in the day and get a beer or two to enjoy in the evening.
I'd recommend going out with your full pack on short rides to learn how to adapt to carrying the extra load as it caught me out at the start of the first ride and had me in a ditch 2 or 3 times.
