In January i'm turning 18 and therefore can compete in any race i want. I'm looking to do some Merida's, 12 & 24hr events and the Trans Wales if it's going to be running.
I'm looking on the net and struggling to find any meaningful information on 09' races. Am i looking in the wrong places or is it simply not there yet as it is still early doors on these events? I thought they'd be organised well in advance!
loads of stuff will be announced in the spring. first one could be strathpuffer. its in my exams which is a shame...
if you want a proper alpine race then grand-raid/cristalp is aparently the hardest one day mtb race in europe. ~130km with about a 12 hr time limit. 5400m vertical climbing. couple of my mates completed it this summer, while i did the 78k/3500m version. not sure i'll be going out for it next year as there is a 100k marathon event near bikevillage which has 3000m climb but 4000m descent due to it starting at the top of a lift.
other than that i'd recommend
relentless (08 was last weekend) - quality course, small field, friendly, cold and probably wet (this year was amazingly dry despite forecasts!) mayhem - for the atmosphere, NOT the course... selkirk merida - the best one so i've been told, cracking course too. Scottish XCs have some incredible XC race tracks, worth a go if you're up this way BUSA (eligible to enter?). for the chat. SSUK... blummin awesome event. only grand-raid bettered it imo.
10 under the Ben and 10 at Kirroughtree are my favourites. Did them both as a pair this year but thinking of soloing next year.
Selkirk Merida definitely the best, Penrith not bad but too much pushing up. Ruthin was a disappointment, with too much tarmac and little in the way of singletrack.
British cycling NPS do marathons too, usually on the Sunday after the shorter xc races.
I am planning on doing the full SXC series next year, having done 2 rounds this time. Excellent courses as said above and absolutely knackering despite being short course.
Bear in mind that organisers may wait and discuss when to host events so to avoid as many clashes as possible.
