only just started on a mountain bike and i am wondering what is the advantage,if any, of a double chain ring over a triple one.

Unless you intend to race seriously then I'd forget about a double chain ring set up. After three to four hours in the mountains I am usually glad I have the extra granny ring to get me up that last climb.

Depends, i have a double chainring on my ht, the granny and the second one - i'm not superman so don't need the largest ring when i'm out in thar hills.

According to MBUK you only need 1 ring, for all the weight savings apparently

Yet to see my first fashion victim but hoping it won't be long
