Even if it's as low as that it's still more than in Afghanistan. More to the point. Why is Merkel promising more support to the US in Afghanistan when the majority of Germans are against it?

Merkel often takes quite a right wing stance, and then moves to a more populist position. Some of my colleagues suggest she gets what she really wanted in the end, but makes it look like she has compromised and balanced all the arguments.
