Ok yes I'm being lazy, I haven't googled it. But what's the score with cyclo cross, I believe that you can ride these events on an MTB? I reckon it would be great winter training and a bit of a masochistic giggle. Basically any info appreciated, especially links to events in the north. Not looking forward to hulking my 27lb P7 around on my shoulder though, but I can't afford another bike.

Yes, you can ride on an mtb - at least in the Scottish series as was tempted myself a couple of years back to enter. Probably sneered at by the purists, but f**k em. From checking out the local course they use, there is some carrying involved which I'm sure is replicated across others. Possibly why the advantages of fat tyres in places are allowed I guess. Then again if you are a true MTBer you've carried you bike before in places, although probably not ran with it. A cheap hack rigid with dare I say it, cough, splutter, single speed may be ideal. Scottish stuff here, which the Southern ones may be of use.

 No disc brakes IIRC.

I have googled this and can't find any in Shropshire, lots round North Manchester IIRC. Does look like fun though..

No disc brakes IIRC. think it depends on the event, but it is no disc brakes for UCI sanctioned events. along with.... - Handlebars must not measure more than 50 centimetres (20 in) in width.
- Tire width may not exceed 35 millimetres (1.4 in) and tires may not feature any kind of studs or spikes.
- Wheels shall have at least 12 spokes.
- The bicycle must not weigh less than 6.8 kilograms (15 lb).

DK, grab some 2nd hand carbon rigids from somewhere, find some light and thin tyres from somehwere (preferably with bugger all grip) and you'll be half way there anyway... CX is a right good crack.

Thought a brute like you DK would have hauled a 27lb P7 around no problem

I'm not a brute, I'm a sensitive, caring thing. Eg, it upsets me that so many Orangutans are orphans.

Found a localish race in Wolverhampton on the 24th Jan and Im gonna have a crack at it! It happens to also be the BUSA cyclocross champs so I'll get beat by a load of spotty students. (Mike are you racing??? )

Did my first ever cyclocross event this morning. No trouble on the hardtail for the local league. Unfortunatly it got a bit too warm and the course thored out during the hour very sticky mud by the end, was wishing I had some thin tyres on. Only got one lap down so was fairly pleased considering I did 2.46 of MTBO yesterday.

Ifor what was it like, andwhat event was it?

Was just a local league event in Bristol. This was round 12 of the western league. It was good fun. The course was a lot more twisty and turny than I was expecting. It was all in a very small area quite a lot though trees. I came off once catching my bars on a tree whilest trying to overtake... Probobly about a quater to a third of the field was on mountain bikes. If I do another I will be a bit more agressive at the start as overtaking later on realy took it out of me. I think push realy hard even if you then loose a few places in the next few laps whilest you recover a bit is probobly the way to go.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be racing in on my single speed Tricross, but I'll take note of the shit or bust strategy for the start and give it a go!

Race on Sunday in Wolverhampton - very excited. Pondering whether to nick the wifes V8 copies and ride flats with trail running shoes or to use eggbeaters with mtb shoes - down to how many dismounts there are on the course I guess.

The wolverhampton race is now 2 weeks latter, yesterdays race was at Skelmesdale, somewhere near liverpool. I was there, a very wet day, but some good riding,by all concerned, well organised and set out, enjoyed it.

No Sadbloke, the one I did took place here I had a laugh, it was bloody hard going on the tricross single speed. Only one other guy on a single speed (mountain bike). Got laughed at by the comentator for leaving my saddle bag on!
