That's certainly going to make things rather more fiddly ;-) I've managed to swap banjo-ed hoses left to right before, but it's not as easy as with in-line olive-and-nut jobbers.
Question> Wouldn't it be better if you pumped the pistons out a bit, then shorten them and connect them back, then take of the reservoir cap, the push the pistons back, which would force any bubbles out?
The reason this method works is that you shorten the lever end (i.e. the end furthest from the center of the earth) on an upright bike.
Surface tension and the vacuum behind the fluid in the narrow bore hose means it does not run out and little 'spills' out.
Once its shortened and reattached I belive a very, very small ammount of air *may* be introduced regardless of how careful you are, but it sufficiently little that it will propogae to the (close by) reservoir quickly, this could be sped up by tapping the reattached hose.
Its no more risky than storing your bike upside down in terms of introducing air.
Toms idea seems sound I reckon, you would just need to check your reservoir was full before you start.
Fitted Hayes to my sons P1 to replace the cable-operated originals but the rear hose was way too long. These are not designed to be altered by the customer as the hose is inserted into the end fitting then the fitting is rolled to grip the hose.If there is a likelihood of the length being wrong,i'm sure it wouldn't break the bank to include an extra olive.Mind you,i suppose warranty claims would increase!
what you need to do is get your pistons fairly far out ... not all the way out but a good bit out ... then do the brake hose cutting and reassembly ... then open the reservoir THEN push your pistons back into the caliper any trapped air will be pushed back into the lever reservoir and out ... where you then top up the fluid and thus GUARANTEEING that if you started off with a brake with no air in it that there will be no air in it after !
Our service guys shorten and swap hoses with no need to rebleed. In fact they did the set on my current bike for me like this and they have been absolutely fine.
