Cheers all and thanks for your comments. Well the last three nights have gone towards submitting our appeal. I dropped it off at the Eductaion office about an hour ago.
The basis was the (chosen school) can look after his SEN much better AND secondly the fact he would have to spend 2+ hours per day travelling, and all that goes with that problem.
I take Hobos point on board about parenting etc. However, I want our efforts to compliment the message at school - not combat it!
Dan - The school has been put on special measures 4 years ago. They are now on their 3rd headteacher in that time! They have something like 50% temporary teachers as no one want to work there.
Arry according to the TIMES yesterday a police officer is suing the metropolitian police for £3500,000 pounds because he was dislexic, and got made funof, perhaps you could use that as a threat to sue the education authority for lack of support and care.
Good luck with the appeal - it's an extremely stressful time as you want the best for your kid(s) but you're faced with a situation where no matter what you say or do the decision is in some-one else's hands.
We appealed for both of my kids, but the issue to be addressed is not why the schools we wanted were better for them - clearly they would have been, but they have selection criteria which they said they had applied and we needed to prove that the criteria hadn't been applied correctly - and anyway, I was effectively told that all the places were already allocated, so even if we could have proved that, there weren't any places left.
Anyway, I had to go and appeal in front of a panel with three people and some lawyer / solicitor guy assuring that the process was adhered-to. I fely like I had my say, but ultimately it was never going to make a difference.
If possible, try to look at going private or find a different school somewhere. I wouldn't hold out much hope for the appeal.
Sorry to sound a downbeat note - I really do hope your appeal suceeds and your kid gets into the school you want.
Well thanks to you all - I think all the positive thoughts helped us along the way as this morning Myles is going to........
The school of his (our) choice for an Induction day. We were successful in a getting him a place and I can say it is no small relief to know I can put his balaclava away and cancel the ASBO application I'd made in anticipation of him going to the original school.
dont let up on special needs even though you have got your choice. It wasnt till our eldest went to uni did we get any help. The North Yorks council were useless [rural Tory Bstards]]
We should be ok there - when we went to get his uniform a few days ago, the SEN teacher was there and was a girl that Lynda was at school with. Once they had finished about old times she agreed she'd be keeping a close eye on Myles and his progress.
aw thats nice, best of luck to the little guy, hope hes not to upset he want be appearing on crimewatch as hes not going to the original school. The school for scoundrels, that is.
[rural Tory Bstards]].......political leanings do not make any difference...mines mostly "independant" and my next door mieghbour is currently very upset at whats happening to the provision being provided(taken away)for her autistic son.
A lot depends on the lEA and the head teachers managing budgets.
Sorry, but whether or not your wifes friend is the Ht or not, if the school dooes`nt have a budget to cater for children with special needs then it may not make any difference as to which school he goes to.
We are currently looking to move my daughter & grandson to another area for similar reasons, still being subsidised by the bank of mum`n dad btw!!!
Well his first day went well - he got told off and seperated from sitting with another lad as they were apparently getting along too well!
Cheers for the comments guys. As for the SEN, I went to the Open evening on Monday and the met the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) and hopefully he will be well placed at this school.
They scored an Excellent in almost every area last year (in Ofsted report) and despite the fact that some kids got A-Star-plus etc they are more interested in the 'effort' scores that are dished out in class and claim so long as all kids 'Do their best' and reach their own potential they can't ask for any more.
