Like them or not, they are about the only thing you can put on a normal car these days that will not depreciate horribly from day 1. They are also a great way of disguising the true age of the car. Most women would not know a 10 year old Porsche from a 2 year old one so you can pretend to be wealthier...... (I have an 8 yr old Peugeot btw)
When they eventually come up for resale you'll generally get far more than you paid for it (especially if it's a 'proper' personalised plate like DAN 1 not AR55 DAN).
