The way I interpret that is that I can go down the inside or the outside as I please in congested conditions but should not weave in and out Andy M. AFAIK wizzing down the inside of stationary traffic isn't specifically banned so it's allowed. Andy C's dilemma come from the fact it isn't specifically authorised either. Some drivers seem to think it is banned and block but we have ways of making them change their habits.
Being a motorcyclist, car driver and cyclist I've learn't that putting your self in a situation where you're gonna come off worst if the inevitable happens is just plain silly.
Being a good road user means the same if your a motorcyclist or a car driver, show respect, dont put yourself in any danger, always look ahead and try to percieve and judge traffic as you go along.
I find too many car drivers who are seem to be bothered about what others are doing and ignore what they're doing...they're not the ones that will come off best in a mild collision...as a cyclist you have to worry about what you're doing and also what others are doing...takes more concentration the less wheels you seem to ride on ..but trikes I...I just dont get them at all.
I seem to be able to ride how I like without annoying motorists - only once has a car driver ever seen me in the mirror & pulled in towards the curb - that was when I was young and angry - he pulled out when I gave his car a kick. Wouldn't do that now tho.
Obviously, NEVER undertake an HGV or a bus going round a left hand corner.
I have no interest in being angry at stuff - bit cliched but it's true that it doesn't do you any good on the inside... as well as the fact it makes no difference. And f people know you're angry at them, they just get more determined.
I've ridden on the roads since I was about 8, so about 28 years, and never been hit by anything - in my experience common sense makes the most difference. You can follow ALL the rules & get knocked off by someone, just make sure you know where everyone else on the road is, what they're doing and if possible what mood they look to be in!
spot on Mike, thats the way everyone should see it if you want to stay alive on the UKs roads while cycling.
As for undertaking on the left,I sometimes do it going up to traffic lights when traffic is stationary, however,I always expect the first car in the queue(who may not be indicating) may turn left so always stop short of overtaking this vehicle so I don't get cut up or worse still knocked off.
There's a lot of stupid people out there, they're still stupid when they get behind the wheel of a car, then they become dangerous with it.
On my commute home when the traffic is stationary and on a bit of road just before the bus/cycle lane starts should i pass on the inside (and then progress onto bus lane bit) or on outside and then cut back in across traffic and across onto bus lane?
Also, those stupid foot-wide cycle lanes that bring you up the inside of traffic are lethal imo... cars very rarely seem to notice you and I've more than my fair share of non-indicating drivers cutting across in front of me..
If I have to leave enough room for a cyclist to pass on the left while I'm stationary it would mean that I'm very close to the white line. So rather than leave just enough room so that the cyclist scrapes my van with his bars, I make sure that they can't get through.
Buy a normal sized van?
I like them red cycle lane bits, IME they force drivers to give you some space.
Dan that situation depends on how fast they're going. Strictly speaking it would be on the outside. But there's the problem with this car/bike aggro....each type of vehicle can brake/accelertae at different rates.
Also the guy on the bike at 20mph is probably quite focussed and alert, 20mph in a car is chillax so they drive in a different style
i think there is something in the HC regarding Motorcyclists that says they may move through the stopped traffic with the exception of the front vehicle. Not sure how this relates to whether its the kerb side or not though. most drivers think cycles are the devils vehicle so in my book, so long as i'm not obviously causing a problem to drivers i will pass on whichever side i feel is the most suitable for me at that time.
Don't get me started on bus drivers though! round me, they seem to think that just cos they have their indicator on for a fraction of a second they are entitled to pull out into the stream of passing traffic without even a cursary glance into their wing mirror. fecking twunts!

Highway code section 60 allow bus out into traffic , or something like that stuck on the backs of our buses,
Buses dont have wing mirrors they have rear facing mirrors.
