Just ordered a On One Scandal direct from On One. A question? Does anyone know if the described 'full gear cable routing' in effect means I can run fully shrouded cables a la Gore ride on fully sealed gear cables? I've never run them before, but have heard many good stories. Are they worth it?
Just run a full lentgh standard cable & outer from the shifter to the mech - no silly gaps along the way to let crud in so the tend to last longer & shift better in all conditions.
I've had no problems with mine since fitting them despite what the UK weather's thrown at them.
You can get XT stuff from CRC for about a tenner all in or £35 for the Gores.
I love it! The first run out on it felt very fast and responsive when you step on the gas. I rode a 50K XC challenge at the weekend - no complaints, comfy as anything. I am mightily impressed by it's low cost, low weight and stiffness. Mine runs a 120mm Fox Float, with a 5 degree riser and no spacers, so with my 32" legs the bars and saddle sit about level. I find this is good balance between XC racing (nowt serious) and trail riding. It'd be a bit more arse up with a 100mm fork on my set up, but that can be tuned to suit obviously. Incidentally for the full lehgth cable runs I bought 25m of shimano cable out and XTR inners (around £25) and cut my own. They are buttery smooth, surprisingly more so than a new set of non full length XTR's I've fitted to my full susser?
Proper test for it on Sunday at the Gorrick Snr Champs (success is NOT finishing in the bottom half!)
I've just built my new Scandal up, size 16, with 100mm forks and at slow speeds it seems like i get a bit of wheel flop. I know everyone raves about the Scandals handling so thought it might be because I'm running 100mm rather than 80mm forks on a smallish frame but if you've been ok running 120mm forks then maybe that's not it?
Mine is also 16" frame, runs 120mm with a 110mm stem. I think I know what you mean though, at very slow speeds on tarmac there is a very very slight feeling of the front wheel flopping to whichever side you start to turn. TBH the amount of times I run very slowly on tarmac (following my 3yr old daughter round the drive on her bike!) it doesn't worry me at all. I've done 2 races on it now - a 50KM challenge in open country and a Gorrick 3 x 5mile laps xc race round tight forest single track, it performs so much better than me!
Cheers Magic, yeah that's what I meant, like you say once you get going you don't notice it and now I've had a few proper rides on the bike I'm not worried about it.
I also did the Gorrick race last weekend, that was my first proper ride on the Scandal, definately wasn't the bike that stopped me from winning
I think I saw you! Were you in the sport/fun race? I finished mine (40-44 vets) and watched for a bit near the start area. You were looping round that big puddle before heading off into the woods. I thought someone had nicked my bike! Cracking course, only let down by me following the bloke who had just gone past me and he missed a turn off a fire road. We both lost a good 2 mins! Most annoying as it was my 3rd lap and I didn't miss it before!
R u doing the Autumn Classic Nov 2nd at Crowthorne Wood, Bracknell?
I did the fun race so that was probably me then on the Scandal with white SID forks. I thought the course was really good too, it was just that sprint up the hill to the finish, trying not to get overtaken, that really finished me off.
Unfortunately I'm working on the weekend of the Autumn Classic so won't be able to make it but I'm definately planning on doing a bit of training over the winter then entering the Gorrick Spring Series races next year. I'll have to make the step up from the fun category now I've got the bike for it.
