The chap who was servicing my spare shock today told me I shouldn't use a ziptie, or anything else, for that matter, as a travel indicator on my shock, as the dirt gets trapped in it and creates striations on the barrel which encourage oil loss. Fancy that. Anyone think they know otherwise? I had a look at my other shock and the rubber ring doesn't seem to have left any marks, but I can see how a ziptie might be more problematic.
Ziptie just possibly, if you left it there for years and constantly pushed it back up the shaft. O-ring no way. Particularly not if they've gone off the end of the shaft and just hang around the eyelet
Ah. Maybe he was just making excuses for the fact that the shock was still leaking oil and losing pressure when it came back from its last service. Still, it's being fixed at no extra charge so that's alright.
I guess if you had the mother seriously tight it is not impossible that a small grain of grit could get wedged underneath and scratch your stantion. And that 2gm has got to hurt!
