This years 24 hr races were washed out by foul weather but here's one for the 24hr hardmen - what was your fave 24 hr race and why?
Mine was Trentham 2003 - red hot, hottest weekend of the year and my first 24 hr race, awesome. The trails here made it one of the, if not the best ,24 hr race venues in the UK till the monkeys came along and put the kibosh on it.
Trentham 2005, after a week of rain the sun god smiled on us for a couple of days and the course was drying nicely during the day, went boggy at night then dried nicely for the rest of the sunday.
My favourite was the first one they tried in Germany in Oberhof where they held the biathlon world champs the year before. It was in the middle of October with 24 hours of constant drizzle and temps around 5 degs as the start/finish area are about 900m above sea level. The track consisted of an 800m plunge from the arena followed by an 800m slog back up again. The team I was in managed to finish second behind a pro team and I can still remember the sheer panic of coming in from my final lap to find that the next in line was standing there showered and changed telling me that he couldn't do anymore and I would have to ride the last hour stint after doing the previous hour. B@&%$d! It was only the thought of losing 2nd place to the team chasing hard that kept me going. It was also the time I had my Cateye stadium and will never forget the anxious glances over shoulders when I overtook people out on the track in the middle of the night as they though that some silent car was somehow approaching them. Happy days!
For me it has to be the first Strathpuffer a few yearas ago. It was so cold that my bike kept freezing and I had to take it into the massage tent to defrost. We were in a team of 3 and the other two dropped out just after midnight. I rode until dawn and I remember the start of the descent in deep mud and the sun coming up, the view was amazing. I totally humiliated myself that morning when I got changed into warm stuff after riding and decided to have a massage. Brain obvioulsy not working and I dropped my trousers to get onto the table and didn't have any pants on. The girls were very nice about it!!! Idiot.
I agree with Podge, that was a great weekend of racing. I remember Patric Adams' countless plees to drink plenty of water. Thoses were the days........When I were a lad....
Last year at Catton we had stomache bugs prior to the race,I got over it in time for the race but my mate turned up Saturday morning, said he'd just pooed his pants back at home, aged 36!Come 10pm he threw the towel in for the night, stuck on the bog.
Mine was Mayhem at Sandwell Park back in the days of long hot summers and suntans, and it was my first solo ride, I lived on adrenalin for weeks afterwards!
