I have it on good authority that Deutsche Post could take up 85% of RM collections/deliveries within a month & the rest within 3. That aside, the CWU are either incredibly brave or fekkin stupid. Apparently, if RM lose 2 of their top 10 commercial customers (looks likely with Amazon) the knock on effect will be immense with job losses guaranteed. What pisses me off is that a CWU official admitted on the radio t'other day that the modernisation restructure they agreed to as part of their last pay settlement is the main reason for this industrial action. My advice, don't take the pay increases if you don't like the strings.

TNT have asked if they can put there people on the street to do door to door, they have said they would like the opportunity to show that they have the ability to do it. seems that there have already been trials in manchester and liverpool. Ah, nice stitch up we'll take London, liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow etc...... they should be made to trail it in the Highlands, Cornwall and Norfolk. They did allow a private company do some deliveries in the US (under their guarantees they would keep deliveries to rural areas) guess what they had to take it back to USPS because they stopped all deliveries to rural areas.

I don't see the royal mail losing amazon, it would effect amazons business if customers couldn't collect undelivered parcels locally. The RM are the only delivery service that can currently do that for 95% of the population.
There are other possibilities for delivery addresses. Amazon are already on record as reviewing their arrangements due to customer dissatisfaction so I wouldn't discount that.

Why pay a extra pound for that, quite a markup on the price of a book or a cd.

That rumour has been around for years. I doubt if they could cope with even 50% of RM traffic in six months never mind the amounts and timescales they claim.

A constantly striking workforce is usually a good indicator of shit management. And the RM has for many years been a cash-cow for government, which is one of the reasons why they haven't invested correctly. And no private company would ever be able to door-step deliver to all UK without ending up looking exactly like the RM - for example, there is no profit in delivering a standard letter into a rural area - all that will happen if we loose the RM is a more expensive service, that won't deliver to all houses.

Why would it have to be a unified delivery service? If the TNT delivery service was split up into TNT Local Birmingham, TNT Scotland, and TNT Local Cumbria the mail could be sent from Birmingham to Keswick the mail from Brum could go to Keswick the mail to The Old Dungeon Ghyll would be delivered locally the Mail to Scotland would then go on North. The logisitics of Door to Door would obviously cost millions but then again the profits could be lucrative...I guess the likes of TNT have probably thought of everything and have cost analysts working hard on making it work if Royal Mail ever lose it.

All these other companies dont have the depots, staff or the sorting machinery to do the job that RM does ,but then again they could buy or rent the RM depots,re-employ the old staff, and sack the poor management, and lazy posties.Nd make a profit for the shareholders Or perhaps not.

Firemen now out on strike in Yorkshire and Sheffield. Message to people of the above places, stay in ,dont cook, and sleep tight,
I don't think the posties should be allowed to strike when I've got a birthday coming up!
And firemen can retire (and take pension) at 52! The only reason they are pissed off is due to the move in hours it upsets their second jobs.
