Hi,

I need to buy a new lock. I need it to be good, however looking at some out there I have to admit i'm hesitant to pay £100+!

I've had a look at the Kryptonite ones, they look very sturdy, but I do worry that there are ways to get through these and having 'Kryptonite' clearly written on them could just be a advert for a bike thief that knows how to break these.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps one that a thief has unsuccessfully tried to break, saw, etc. ?

Thanks!

is this a lock to be portable, or a lock for a secure storage and the lock stays where it is?

No lock is unbreakable, some just take longer than others.

If you're using it to lock a bike up while out and about your best bet would be to get a reasonable one like an Abus or Magnum and lock your bike up very near to a bike that has a weaker/less secure lock.

Most bike thieves tend to be opportunists and are less bothered about the quality of the bike than the security on it. If one lock looks easier to break generally they'll go for that one.

I have two Magnums that cost about £50 each but can't say how good they are as no one has tried to cut them.  I fear that they would not stand up to a professional bike thief with serious cutting equipment.

I don't think any bike lock is going to be as good as a security guard positioned opposite the bike rack 24hrs a day like we have at work.

check out those yales, a lock with inbuilt alarm.

although i should think pouring glue into the speaker may stop the noise.

Well some bikes got nicked at our place and it turned out to be the security guard that was doing it.
