I've recently sent an e-mail off to a local club and asked if I could join in their sunday ride with a view to joining. 2 weeks now and no reply. Am I getting a little previous in thinking that they are a stuck up bunch of baskits?

It's not the largest local club but it's the closest. I'd just like some like minded folks to train with over the winter months.

Also, do you have to be a member of a club to get a racing licence?

Not many local clubs keep their websites up to date and regularly check messages etc, so I wouldn't take it personally or as a sign that they are 'stuck up'.

Does their website not give any fixed regular meet ups? if it does just turn up and ride.

AFAIK you don't need to be a club member to get a license.

Cheers for the reply.

It said on the site to contact the membership seccy first so I PM'd him. I thought I'd give them a couple of weeks more. Or, I may take your advice and just turn up. They meet a couple of streets away. I'm just worried about being left for dead is all with all the testosterone flying about.

If you're interested in getting points from racing then you will need, at the very least, silver BCF membership(which includes 3rd party liability insurance) and a race license, £68 for 12 months all in and thats before you turn a crank in anger. You don't need to be a member of a club to get one either though some people put their club name down on their application but this needs to be a BCF affiliated club.

If you're not going to race much and aren't bothered about ranking points then there's not much point, sorry about the pun, as you can still race without the license though not in any BCF road races.

I think i'd be coming 1-5th in every open race before thinking about getting a BCF licence!

Just because someone has a BCF license doesn't mean they're fast.

At this time of the year they should be riding quite slowly in a small gear with a high cadence anyway.

One person on a bike is recreational cycling or training. Two people or more is a race (unless they are on a tandem).

What John said, it always turns into a race.
