Why would you ever have anything other than clipless on a road bike?
I don't get it, the only bikes I can see needing flats is one where you spend half the time off the pedals I.e. BMX freestyle, MTB freeride or DH bikes.
Every other form of cycling would benefit from clipless pedals...you're all mental utterly mental

 I thought we were talking about the road rat, the kind of bike you might use for commuting, a trip to the pub or cafe, or do some shoping on. Not a roadbike in the drop handlebar tour de france mode.

No that's a "Hack" bike  My thoughts of a commute bike are a bike which takes you from A-B at speed, the end destination of which you will get changed into your work gear.

Not really, (well I don't think so at least) the same way I wouldn't put a carbon seatpost on a BMX I use pedals related to their application.
On my BMX i run flats for the most part or caged clipless for the track, on my jump/hack i run flats and on my XC bikes I run clipless pedals.
If I had a commute/road bike I'd run clipless too

I doubt you'd find a carbon seatpost in the diametre needed for you BMX.  I agree with the application thing to some extent but flats are so much more pleasant to use they often get put on my bikes and once they're on it takes race day to get them off again. I make a point of training with SPDs from time to time so I don't forget how to use them but they make me nervous which takes some of the pleasure away. One one five-week tour I put double-sided M323s on the front of the tandem and a pair of flats on the back for Sean. On the fifth day I left my trainers on when getting ready and put my cycling shoes in the bag. After another week with the cycling shoes in the bag I swapped the pedals front to back so Sean had the M323s which didn't seem to bother him and I got my beloved flats back for the rest of the holiday.

I rode a roadie with V8s today in sandals, it had panniers on though so that's alright. Hope you had no fcuking socks on this time

Of course, how else would I stop my trackie bottoms getting covered in chain oil? About 5000km in the last four months of which about 4500km on flats.

Last four months Ive only done about a 1/3 of that but the percentage of clipped in is about the same as your clipless. I only ever ride the 5 miles round trip to work on flats thats only because I wear the same shoes at work.

Leather-soled town shoes on rat traps aren't a good advert for flats. Try some 5:10s or similar on properly spiky pedals and you might get a taste for them.
