Mike, what happened to your fund raising linky?

Tim, 14 laps in the end. Moderately happy with that.

I'd say 14 laps was a great performance. Like I say, had I not been taking pictures, maybe I'd have settled on 6-7 in the end. Difficult to say tbh.

Can't quite get my head around 23 laps though.

The guy must be in such supreme physical condition. Also, I think someone else did 22 laps.

That's a sub 1hr lap every hour for pretty much most of the 24hrs. Boggles the mind. Flat out I think I'd be capable of a 43 min lap or thereabouts, so to be able to sustain such a cadence is beyond my ability to comprehend what that'd be like to ride at that level of ability.

Best he's a wee bit stiff this morning.

At least I clocked up the longest lap!

Apparently the official count has David Powell on 22 laps (rigid geared 29er) and Aidan Harding on 21 (singlespeed). Even so, that's lots and lots. If you want to get some idea of training and preparation, Dave's got a blog thingy at http://www.twinklydave.com/wordpress/. Some quite extensive rides in there

22 laps over 24 hours = 1:05 per lap. Looked at another way, 22 laps was 191 miles, so that's an average speed of 8.7mph (including stops). Part of the trick is not stopping much - while my stops tended to be 20 minutes of snacking, faffing and going for a pee, Dave was pretty much just swapping bottles and picking up food. He was aso riding faster, which helps

Well, there's a substantial difference in required effort between 43 minutes and an hour. That said, I'd done four laps within the first four hours and that certainly wasn't a pace I could sustain - nearly 14 hours to reach 10, then the rest of the event to eke out the final four.

Dave's scary, though, he looked exactly the same at the end of the event than at the beginning. He could have at least had the common decency to look slightly tired

Oh yeah.. that was me on my first 24hr. And jolly good fun it was too.

Really good "race" with a nice course and lots of friendly riders. I have to say Mike always looked friendly and freshly kitted out

Writing my blog about the ride is coming, but I only just wrote the article about swimming with the Channel Swimmers in Dover last week so I'm a bit behind.

if you like that sort of thing.
