Hi,

I'm heading up to the Stanes for a weekend in October and we'll probably end up riding Dalbeattie, Ae and Mabie.  We're looking for B&B accomodation recommendations, preferably somewhere we can get a curry ( ) or other good food in the evenings?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

Mike

It`ll have to be Dumfries then. Good curry in the one on St Michaels St.

Some B&Bs round the corner on Glebe St

Mate is @ Saughtrees on Annan Rd.01387 252358

 Google Dumfries and Galloway B&B....

Look for Torbay Lodge, Hazeldean, Langlands, known bike friendly.

Can do some numbers etc later when I get home.

Ae may have some flood damage apparently, with some of the route closed. But there are some alternatives, likewise Mabie & Dalbeattie

Dates?

Pop into Hobo Style and see if anyone is biking on your weekend. Most are Carlisle dwellers.

These are my local trails.

Had a quick look at your profile. Fancy an "epic"??

It's probably going to be the weekend of 3-Oct.  We were thinking of those three because we've done them before and really liked them, apart from the time I fell on Dalbeattie and had to cut the weekend short of course!

If there are sections closed on them, which would you recommend?  Hadn't thought of that, I've just tried to check out the 7stanes site for news but can't seem to spot any on there.

Epic eh?  Erm, maybe...

I've stayed at Kippford holiday park and that was a good base for the region.  Good prices and bike friendly too!

yeah but no access to a curry house Slidey!!

Mike I`m off on the 3rd and 4th, working the 5th.

Ae..it is possible to make a big day out but it would mean using quite a bit of forest road.

Mabie..local knowledge can add another couple of hrs riding on to the red route. Been known to be out for 5hrs.

Dalbeattie..likewise can make a whole day out of local bits in the forest, some used by sxc, and a coastal path nearby.

Another option is to go to Kirroughtree...only 1hrs drive from Dumfries.

A bit of hike`a bike required for some off-piste riding.

Drumlanrigg is another option..about 3/4hr drive from Dumfries. Some magic hill routes up there btw. OS 78 Nithsdale.

Mail me if you like via site box.

Do you need any more names/numbers etc for B&B?

Danny @ Saughtrees above is a biker btw, both mtb & motorised.

You could try www.thebreakpad.co.uk/

A very bike friendly b&b at Dalbeattie. I know the owners - they also run the bike shop at Kirroughtree so they know the local biking scene pretty well.

Enjoy your trip - and be careful taking john up on his offers of a Dumfries "epic". His knowledge of the local trails is encyclopedic but can result in "challenging" rides. Having said that his rides are always great and often include some ace secret trails!

Avoid the Chinese takeaway in Dalbeattie, it won't be long before it makes it on to BBC's life of grime. There's a pub in Haugh of Urr if you fancy a drive out that serves superb food although I can't remember what it's called but I think it may be the only one there, it's a white place with a restaurant to the right of the entrance & a car park to the right of the pub. Bar food is superb & there's also a pool table.

Be a shame to drive all that way & miss out on doing Kirroughtree tho

Thanks for all this.  As a slight aside, any news on the flood/weather damage?  If they're not mostly open we may end up postponing until later or maybe Spring time.

Thanks

everything is open 24/7/365. Bit of a diversion @ Ae due to flood damage but can be got round. Currently new drainage pipe is being installed and banks reinforced.

not much on there that you can`t get off 7Stanes.co.uk web site, 7Stanes.com or via local shops..Ae, Mabie(biking heaven)CD cycles, Breakpad.

Being my locals they can`t print the stuff we ride!!!

It`s Scots btw.

And I guide and give info for free.
