In order to fit both front and back panniers onto a mountain bike (rockhopper) so that my heel doesnt get caught on the pack panniers, what kind of distance do I need between wheels? i.e. is there a simple measurement that I can take on 26" wheels between the front of the back wheel and the back of the front wheel?

 does this even make sense?

It does. How long is a piece of string? Or more to the point the amount of foot sticking out back? With small feet, foot well forward on the pedal and roadie shoes you'll have no problem. Size 14 trainers pedalling with your toes expect trouble. Proper touring frames have 46cm chainstays but most people get on fine with the usual 42cm MTB standard.

I have size 14 feet, use Old Man Mountain rack, Ortleib panniers (back as far as they'll go), my heels clear on the various MTBs I've used. Only way is to suck it and see.

The bike on Sunday.

Grant's whisky?

How uncivilised.

Nah, that's the Grouse, decanted out of the one litre bottles you can get here for about £11...the Grants was an old 1/4 bottle lying about (soon to be replaced with a hip flask from the Chinese version of Ebay). What kind of a chap do you think I am?!
