I've been using the OS maps to find decent trails in the Sth Bucks area - I live in Chalfont St Peter. I've found that there's some good riding in Hodgmoor Woods, Penn Woods and of course Lotts Wood(Hyde Heath) are there any more out there ? Also looking for some mid week riders that I might be able to tag along with. I do shift work and can get about during the week now and again.

Have you looked at the Sustrans maps on their site? Green is off-road, orange is signed on-road (but not NCN rated).

I'm based in the Watford area and know a few routes along the M25 corridor. Tim

To be honest you need to come a little further out; there are plenty from Chesham/Great Missenden onwards. Or train out to Princes Risborough and then ride back thru the Hampdens to G.M.

If you cross over from penn woods and drop dopown to hughenden you can climb into the downley woods at the baqck of naphill and some great rides can be had there. We ride all around this area as we are based in Penn / Hazlemere and we regularly bang 20 - 25 mile loops in by connecting woods together without being more than 5 miles away from our houses. Linking Hodgemoor to netherwood to penn wood then common wood zip through terriers via the back of hazlemere football park and cross over to four ashes and drop straight down the crazy trail to the entrance to hughenden manor up there all through downley and loop to the airbase and back then drop back down to the bottom of speen and then through hampden to missenden up the back to hyde heath and along the ridge past lotts wood into amersham. Drop through amersham and climb into the field up to the back of botterels lane. thats a big ride but you can split it into two.You canpull off to the back of holtspur or through prestwood or even all the woods around kingshill...There are some real good trails around if you don't mind being a bit of a footpath ninja. Hope this helps

It's a little bit of a drive from where you are, but Aston Hill in Wendover is pretty good. It's only a short loop, but it's purpose built and lots of fun (hard work on the uphill, but worth it). www.rideastonhill.co.uk for details.

Yes. I know Aston Hill and hope to make it there more often this year. That hill climb is a sod! Managed 3 laps back-to-back averaging 29 mins a lap (I think). Thanks

just dont stray off of the xc track and end up on a downhill like we did in the rain and end up face planting on chalk and flint .. My mate ended up in stoke mandeville for the evening stitching his top lip back to his nose. Possible pic post may be forthcoming...hehehehe

Go on, I'll offer this for starters. Yes his ear is hanging off.

Not interested in Aston Hill in the wet. As you say, steep + chalk = no joy. Even the new Trail Centre Guide (Vertebrate Publishing) alludes to this - aviod Aston in the wet. Tim

Is that Justin Swift? It looks suspiciously like him and he did have a big off in penn woods about 18 months ago

 Correct.

Johnny " eats " aston Hill this is after I had cleaned him up you cant see it but there was a 2 inch cut right under his nose that you could see his teeth through. I didnt notice untill we had climbed back to wendover woods carpark ( about 4 miles ) fair play to him on making that cos it was one hell of a crash and he was ripping it.The chalk was soaking and it was in the dark days before new matey ( forgot his name but sat opposite him at the curry) took over.So it wasn't that well maintained. Sorry for hijacking the thread... Cheers
