Hello.... er, hopefully some of you guys might be able to help me.... I've just bought a 1998 (i believe) Y3, its the ice blue colour so i think i've got the year right, only thing that doesn't add up is the xt front and rear derailleur, which according to this spec i have should be stx/lx respectively, tho to be honest it does leave me a bit confused. Anyway, fact is, saw it and couldn't resist it. OK, its an old bike but it looks the t*ts... i've read early reviews which all pretty much say the same... front shox (rockshox) is crap... wheels.... crap... and other stuff, anyway, i'm thinking new fork, wheels, and front disc..... anyone have any experience with this model ? any help or advice regarding upgrading will be greatfuly received.. and rewarded with a beer ............if you live in Norfolk...... many thanks... R. btw, i regularly ride my Orbea (hard tail) round Thetford Forest.........

um do you mind me asking how much you paid for it? I grew up in norfolk btw . .

Hi Dan, i paid £130.. its in great condition, very pleased with it (only rode round the block on it when i got home this afternoon tho...)

 Dick Bullock,thats harsh dude.
Quinny............ er, do i know you ??????

£130? That's not too bad I suppose. I was worried you were going to say that you'd paid £500 or something daft for it! As for your question, forks would be a good ugrade certainly, then wheels and brakes..

__________.jpg) What possessed you to buy a 10-year old suspension bike?
Good point, one that I was to shy to ask
Yep, thats a good question, to which i don't really have an answer that i can even convince myself with... anyway, any suggestions for the fork ? I read somewhere Marzochi (think i spelt that wrong) do a fork that works magic on the Y3 ? Thanks in advance, R.

It's probably a good idea to find out the axle-to-crown length of your current forks and get one similar. Forks have got longer over the last 10 years!

Bikes have moved on a vast amount, I'd be very wary of spending too much money on a bike like the Y3 which uses what is now a very crude suspension system. Get it working by all means, but I wouldn't spend any real money on it. Any reviews you're reading are going to be 8-9 years old at least, so components they're recommending are totally irrelevant. I'd say the Orbea is gonna be a far better bike!

Thanks guys, The advice is much appreciated. Its getting a top to bottom service, think i'll hold back on any 'upgrades' until next year, after i've had a chance to get used to it and evaluate it. Might just keep it 'as is' for historical purposes

i think the only thing i would upgrade on that is the frame
