So it's basically a stronger Freehub? Sounds like a good hub for dirt jumps.

 Not stronger in terms of axle, stronger in terms of torque transmission. So, dirt jumpers would probably break it as soon as any other mid-range Shimano hub, but I can see 4X riders liking it. My rider broke 3 hubs doing gate practice last season!

Logic for the hub seems sounds, but I can't help thinking the cassette would have been better as 14-36 (or even 16-36) to (slightly) reduce the jumps in number of teeth between adjacent cogs...

 mmmm, that bigger range cassette sounds like a winner if I carry through my threat of putting a chain device on the front of my 456...

 I wonder what'd happen to a SRAM mech if you put it in 44/36! I wonder if that explains why the long cage Shadow mechs are quite as long as they are ie much longer than the old SGS cage mechs.

 So what are the downsides? Heavier? Noisier? More Expensive? If not, why didn't they just make all their hubs stronger?

The non-shadow SGS Shimano derailleurs and the old SGS both have the same capacity Nick, and the same as the SRAM X series - 45t max. In theory, the 12-36 cassette with a 44 chainring is outside the capacity rating of both Shimano and SRAM. Perhaps Shimano insist on a 42t front?

Yes I know that, but that's not what limits the biggest sprocket capacity. Going by the capacity, SRAM Red road mech could theoretically cope with a 32/44 and a 12-34, but you'd rip it in half if you went into the 44/34! Shadow SGS mechs have a visibly longer cage than non-Shadow ones, and as a 13-36 is the same range as an 11-34 the capacity range is fairly irrelevant. Why say the new cassettes are compatible with current Shadow mechs if they're also ok with non-Shadow mechs. Your point about the downside is an interesting one though, I'd guess at heavier, maybe a trade off some people want to make though.

Why on earth would you need a 36? I get the thing about gearing, but surely with a mtb triple on the front!? I run my 29er with a lowest gear of 32x32.
