For reasons too boring to go into, I'd rather have a 68mm BB shell on my Trek 8500 than the 73mm it has. I've never had a BB faced, so don't know how long the process takes - is it realistic to ask the shop to take 2.5mm off each side, or would it take forever?

I've heard tales of shops taking a couple of mm off without trying so it shouldn't be an issue. CK actually provide a set of spacers with their BB's to compensate for 'enthusiastic' facing.

It won't take more than a few minutes if their tool is sharp.

The question why does have to be asked, all you will be doing is changing the width of the BB,The shells will still be the same width apart as the difference will have to be made up with a 2.5mm spacer each side.

Perhaps I'm not using an HTII BB. Perhaps I want to be able to swap one set-up (that can't be adjusted with spacers) between two frames that are currently of differing sizes. Perhaps the BB/crank set-up I want to use isn't compatible with a 73mm BB shell. Perhaps, although I was not familiar with the mechanics of facing a BB, I have some idea what I'm on about...

See, I said it was boring.

Perhaps in the future you want the ability to use 68mm specific external bearing setups too, like the THM-Carbones DP 68.

All sorts of reasons...

The only thing I'd consider is the depth of the thread, you'll obviously be losing 5mm of it!

It's only 2.5mm from each side though

Ask Tim Ti29er LBS to file it down while they are doing his brakes

Doubt they have the tool, they'd try using their finger nails
