For all the posts slating some bike shops thought I post a thread commending the service from the Edinburgh Bike Co-op.
After todays jaunt around Glentress was cut short with a broken XT shadow derailier, I decided a trip to the bike shop was required for a new one.
However on discussing it with a mechanic he suggested it may be possible to salvage,& after ignoring the job he was working on stripped it down there & then.
The end of the spring had somehow jumped out of its retaining hole, hence simply spinning with no tension. All it required was to be pre-assembled correctly and perfect.
Admittedly slightly embarrassing from my side, but then again the mechanic even admitted he had never looked inside the spring housing before either.
I have slight reservations as to how the bugger became loose in the first place & hope it doesn't repeat - will see how it goes. Very easy to sort.
Just goes to show its worth checking failures - alternative is costly new part when it may not be needed.
