OK when I get my new frame all the good stuff will go on it, but I should have enough bits around to make up the old frame as a singlespeed minus the drive train. That way I can have a bike for commuting and shopping that can be treated as crap.

I was thinking of getting a deore crankest and just sticking a single chainring on it, whats a decency singlespeed chainring most seem to have ramps and pins ect, and a dmr conversion for the rear wheel (sprocket and tensioner).

What have other people done? I want to keep the costs down so no middleburn uno cranks at the moment.

easiest way - don't change gear
i used a steel deore middle ring on my ss until the frame snapped. but ideally you'd want a ss specific one

I used a gusset bikes converter kit, but it was a very tight fit on my freehub body, almost got stuck. though the base of the sprocket didn't do much damage to my very very soft freehub

check out charliethebikemonger.com for everything SS

When I put together a single speed roadrat I used a secondhand hone crankset and just used the big ring from that with shorter chainring bolts. Used a conversion kit for the rear hub and a proper chain. Didn't need a tensioner as the frame has slotted dropouts. Its been fine so far and the chainring hasn't died yet.

I found the on-one version of this worked best as a tensioner.... here

the other type skipped all over the place. It  supposed to be used pushing up on the chain but the cowled drop outs on the soul prevented this so I had it pulling down from inside the chain. I also had to run the chain line down the side of the roller as is would want to wander and pull the chain of the gear. I used the on-one gear and spacer kit on a standard freehub, but fine tuned the chain line with spacers off a knackered cassette. After a while I had to swap the gear out for the wider Surly offering as the narrow on-one was cutting up the hope pro II aluminium freehub.

I used a dmr conversion kit on old Decathlon bike. Left normal crank in place (was not worth upgrading). Worked very well and kind of wish I had kept it for use as a pub/shop bike. Shimano make a hone single speed crank, but it is expensive and unless you need a new crankset, I would just use an old one.
