It should have been a Tax allowance for companies investing in equipment and vehicles, 120% would be about right and 0% VAT on Car purchases for Joe Public.  On a £10k car thats about £1500 saving which doesnt effect the dealer discounts and doesnt effect the second hand market.  It also keeps the 3yrs replacement cycles in place which after the fleet cars is what keeps the motor trade tickig over.

How about a similarly sized subsidy on solar water heaters.

We've had these subsidies on and off for years, the breakers end up not being able to cope for a while and the cars taken off the road are the small cheap ones that didn't pollute much in the first place rather than 20-year-old V8 Discoveries and Land Cruisers.

I would be happy if they gave me £2000k to scrap my car and gave me that in vouchers to spend on public transport or a new bike.

If you're going to buy a new car anyway, and want to trade in a half decent one, why not goto a scrapyard and buy some proper shitter for £50, get £2k for it, then sell your old car privately for what you would have traded it in for?
