Neighbour has a Whyte bike ( not sure of models but poss 16/19???), It has lots of carbon fibre on it and is a full sus. He gets this strange sort of cracking/creaking noise when going over rough terrain or when giving the pedals some welly. It doesn't sound or feel like its his bottom bracket, does anyone know if these bikes have any inherant faults. I have tried to locate the noise but its been difficult to pin down. I think the noise tended to sound after the shock has been compressed and was on its way back up to normal position. I have no experience with carbon fibre but the noise does sound very plastic cracking like although the CF looks in tip top condition.

Don't worry about the carbon - that fails catastrophically, not by cracking It could be loads of things - bottom bracket, pivot bearings, shock bushings, seat, seatpost, chainring bolts, bars, stem etc. I've been stripping & rebuilding various bits of my FS to get rid of some creaks over the last couple of weeks & checked all the above. The last one that seems to have ended all creaking was the rear mech hanger - took it off & cleaned all the cak that had migrated behind it slapped it back on and silence returned. DK has a point though, Whytes are notorious for mysterious creaks...

It's a Whyte. Take it back to the shop and tell them that you suspect that the frame is cracked (it probably is), they'll strip it and send it back to Whyte and within the week you'll have a new frame. All this asssumes that they haven't changed the quality of their frames or customer service recently.

If its when he's pedalling, it might be something as simple as the pedal bearings being worn out. I had a similar thing when I thought the it was everything else and new pedals solved it!

If it helps the model is an E-5 Whyte. I got him to clean everything up as he had a lot of crud everywhere and to oil all the various points so next time I see him i will ask if the creak is still there.

I spent several hours stripping and rebuilding parts of my bikes, trying to find the source of a 'creak'. The guilty party turned out to be my shoes. Not sure why, but my Spesh shoes creak, the Shimano ones don't.
