Any oil do?

I seem to have an issue with a sticky piston on a Shimano LX m585 brake. Has anyone ever pulled these apart to service them or is that ill advised. I was looking at bleeding my brakes and i thought whilst I am doing that i may as well look at the piston issue.

On another related note is it ok to use any mineral oil or should i stick to Shimano oil? I have heard that any mineral oil is ok to use as Shimano's is nothing special other than the price!

Those calipers are not designed to be taken apart and even if you do there are no internal parts available for them.  Sticky pistons can normally be solved by a good clean and lubing.  A good rub of mineral oil on them and cycling in and out will free them up.

I have cleaned them good and proper but never had any oil to use on them so may be thats the key to it. Will invest in some oil but not shimano's if i can help it. Thanks. i have never bled the brakes either so may be that may help with performance.

I would try and get the shimano oil. as you've no idea what it is. it's not like dot fluid, where dot 4 is dot 4, the mineral oil in the brakes could be anything!

though magura oil should be fine

Definitely avoid DOT oil, it will destroy your seals and a sticky piston will be the least of your worries.

For the amount of it that you will ever use, I suggest you invest in the 'proper stuff'.

I have a spare bottle of Shimano mineral oil in my desk drawer.  Yours for the price of a 4 pack of Stella

Does that mean there are variations on mineral oil without any classification as with other oils (i.e. weight). That does throw a fly in the ointment. I was told by a bike mechanic that any mineral oil would do and that Shimano say to use theres only as a cash cow exercise. He has used some from Halfrauds with no ill effect at all and in fact thought it was slightly better although not really measurable.

It might all be the same stuff.

What's the worst that could happen if it's not?

I have seen the likes of Kato post up that Halfords sell Citreon suspension oil which is the the same stuff but a fraction of the price.  I think its described as LHS oil from memory.  Check it out online.
