Hi, I am at my wits end with my 5 at the moment! There is a creak that occurs when i apply pressure to the cranks (nothing when I'm gently riding on the flat) that sounds like the bottom bracket is knackered. However, LBS changed the BB and the problem remained so they put the old one back. They have greased everything/tightened/loosened everything but still the creak persists. I'm pretty sure he regreased the swingarm bushes too. Has anybody else had this problem? To add to my irritation, Route 51, who i bought the bike from seem to have disappeared off the face of the planet making warranty something of an issue unless Orange are prepared to step in. Anyone had experience of Orange with warranty commitments? Cheers

Swingarm Bearings? If it has any? That's what was creaking on my full sus recently. Changed the bearings and problem solved !

I had this problem with my 5 and it turned out that it was the rear quick release was,nt tight enough. Now my quick release is really tight and no more creaking.

thanks for that chaps, we thought it may be the rear wheel skewer but we've over tightened it if possible and still the creaking - not sure about bearings tho, do 5's have any there? Will certainly go down both of these avenues - cheers

Its a long shot but check the saddle is tight and pop a smear of grease on the seat post. (assuming the threads on the BB are lightly greased)...

I've almost stripped & rebuilt my entire bike getting rid of a series of creaks - the final one was by removing the mech hanger, cleaning all the cack from behind it & refitting. She is silent once again

Try changing the rear QR skewer for a Shimano one. The composite in the cam rocker on the original ones can wear when it's overtightened a few times and it'll loosen a little when the lever is fully closed in some cases. It could be the swingarm bearings though. 2X, 6902 2RS. They're easy to remove, I think there are instructions on the Orange website.

I had a mystery creak that was only appearing under hard pedaling. I was convinced it was my bb then discovered that it was the outer freewheel bearing (pro 2). I just had them replaced and the creak is gone. You could always try replacing the shock eyelet bushings, they've been known to creak as well.

cheers for all the suggestions - oddly and coincidently, I went out for a quick ride tonight... lovely, 200yds later a flat rear tyre and no replacement grrrr.... however, changing the tube, obviously removed and replaced the rear wheel - the creak appears to have gone! So, maybe it is that skewer as somebody suggested. Interestingly, a guy at Orange suggested that it may be the rear mech hanger (if it is silver it is the old type (not as good) and needs replacing with the new, black, one which is made of a better material) so that maybe a source of creaks for others viewing this thread. Will post again if the creak returns. In the meantime I'll have a look at changing that skewer - I'm more tempted by the Hope than the shimano one because it looks prettier lol

Hope skewers are fine as long as you don't overtghten them, and a bit of chainlube in the brass cam rocker makes them easier to use, as it doesn't wear the alloy cam too quickly. If the guy you spoke to at Orange was Michael Bonney, he really knows his stuff. I've worked with him on several occasions and I always learn something from him when I'm fortunate enough to do so.

'Er in doors bought an Orange 5 Deva last year. Developed horrible creaking after only a few months from bottom bracket area. I am less than entusiastic over ISIS BB - it was nackered - and for years have used Royce BB but when I came to change it I found the drive side thread had been cut a bit over 0.010in oversize. Fortunately I have access to lathe etc so was able to make oversize cup. Creak cured. 6 months later new creak sychronised with pedalling. Was about to change pivot bearings but looks like several other places to look.
