hi guys/gals, like everything i order, i like to be different and as such i've just bought myself a marin muirwood 29er. everyone i see has specialized or giant bikes and i wanted something different, trouble is, after spending £700 on bike and gear, i realised i don't know much about marin.can anyone tell me if i've made a good decision? i'm using the bike for commuting and general cycling (mostly road but some off road) also can i fit chunkier tyres to this bike and take it offroad?

any help much appreciated

There's a certain irony about buying a Marin to be 'different'.

Marin's are good bikes chap, very popular middle of the market brand.  You can put some wider MTB type tyres on it but you may find the gearing a little hard going off road.

Back in the day, mid-late 80's, Marins were THE bike to have - they were for me anyhow.

From what I remember - and I'm sure somebody will correct me - they were one of the first specialist MTB brands that were stocked by many UK bike shops along with Muddy Fox, and as such were often 'the most expensive bikes' in the shop.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one that 20 years ago aspired to trade their Raleigh for a Rocky Ridge or Indian Fire Trail with its purple anodised stem and spoke nipples!

There seems to have been a backlash against them a few years ago, usually by people who don't understand why people can have fun on a bike even if it hasn't been welded from kryptonite by the light of a full moon.

I won many a race on a rigid Pine Mountain in the early 90's and 3 bikes in my garage are Marins. Good bikes.

1 other thing i was wondering was how off-road can a hybrid bike go?

They went through a bit of a phase where the purists regarded them as "boring", but even the most anti-Marin cynic at my LBS admitted that my new Rock Springs was an absolute hoot to ride.

Like Mike said earlier you might find the gearing harder - off road riding usually requires smaller gears i.e. smaller chain rings up front and bigger sprockets at the back - depends how strong you are. Also you'll need knobbly tyres and clearance between these and the frame might be a issue. I can only fit 2.1's on my Point Reyes but then that's all I run on my 'proper' MTB anyway

The frame will be as strong as any MTB frame - the Muirwoods is steel isn't it? No problems there
