Hello,

I am trying to find some full length mud guards to fit my Marin Nail Trail.  It’s a hard tail with front suspension.  I use the bike for commuting and a bit of off road at the weekend’s fire trails etc.  I’ve found loads of rear guards that come in sets and the front looks like it won’t fit.  So I’m just wondering what other people are doing?  I have had a look on google and find some people modifying them but not listing the mud guard and forks they worked on?  Any help would be great

to be honest robert mud guards on MTbs are very silly, they just catch on undergrowth and get full of mud, which is why most people do not use them, crud catchers at the back are great, and the frount one is good to, you can get a little piece of neoprene that goes in the fork crown that stops the mud as well. but really thats about it for real mtb compatable mud guards.

Ok here's something a little more useful

I use a Topeak Defender front mudguard, just the front section (it comes in two halves) and a crud catcher on the down tube - works a treat.

If you stick around you will see most of BM is essentially fluff...

Ok...you will find that a rear full length mudguard will fit fine and you'll have no real trouble doing any of the riding you mention.

Front mudguard you're going to find no resolve due to your bike having suspension, the best solution is one of the big motocross styles or if its a commuter bike try going rigid.

The nearest you'll get to an olde worlde full length is an SKS Beavertail, come as a pair.

I used to commute to work through woods and on roads on the same bike I used for 'proper' riding too, I know where you're coming from. Be ready for odd looks and plenty of piss taking though!

The beavertail will need some kind of mod though to attach to the underside of the fork crown, I used the mounting bracket off a 'MX style' mudguard, cut the beavertail at the mounting bracket slot and bolted the two halves onto the bracket as the mx style halves would. Not a cheap option though.

Thanks for you help.  I think there is a market for mud guards that will fit closer to the wheel on a xc bike.  Any one intrested in developing a design for one?

I think this could be the turning point in the econmic down turn lol!

Not really as Serge says, two minutes in mud and they will get clogged up, just look at the chainstays after a ride, I've had to scoop inches of the brown stuff off on rides before so god only knows what a mudguard would do.

Mudguards (except of the crud catcher/wolfguard variety) really are the preserve of commuters and touring bikes.

Getting muddy is part of the fun . For much of the year mountain biking is about playing in the mud. Let your inner child run free

Commuting, well thats a different barrel of monkeys i suppose.

I have the topeak defender front and back for more commuter less technical stuff, works OK and saves the washing machine but you still get muddy feet and stuff.

Now you can always try overshoes... depending on the terrain they can work.

Anyway it'summer, what am I talking about.
