Top job Richard. It's one thing doing a ride like that knowing you will make it, but another thing entirely to take something on that you don't know you can complete before you start. Well done!

If it wasn’t for the sheep it would have been boring.  I trained on the North Downs which is relatively sheep free. Thanks for your comments of encouragement, both here and my previous news item.

Rich R's post above says it all - takes a special kind of bravery to push the boat out like that, in the public gaze.

Thing is, people who do that kind of thing, who actually commit, who take the risk, who invest months or years in planning and training - they get the respect (unlike the empty vessels, no matter how much noise they make).

Well done Richard.

How far in were you, before you were sure you could finish?

Well done Richard - heroic stuff. Totally agree with Neil's comments too.

Slightly alarmed to hear about the larey sheep though - that's never happened to me. I'll approach them with renewed respect from now on.

Dave A - How far in were you, before you were sure you could finish?

At Truleigh Hill (160m) I hit the wall.  From this point I just set very small milestones with the aim to finish, and assumed that a sub 24 hour time was out of the window.

It wasn't until Jevington (196m) at 23:10 hours in, that I realised a sub 24 hour time was possible.  My spirits lifted and I don't remember seeing the golf course just before the final descent.

The feeling at the end knowing I had clinched a sub 24 hour time was simply fantastic!

Richard

Magnificent achievement, Richard! I met you a couple of weeks earlier on the SDW on the way to Queen Liz Park when I was training for the Randonnée. Glad you made it! Trying to keep pace with you on that training ride seemed to help!
