It's time I upgraded from the crappy Welgo pedals I have on my road bike.  Are there any road pedals that are compatible with Shimano mtb cleats as I don't want to buy separate shoes as well.

In fact, is there any point in getting specific road pedals at all or should I just chuck on a set of trusty M520 pedals like I have on the mtb?

Merlin are selling 520's for £20.  I got the silver ones and they look remarkably like XTR.

That's what I was thinking of getting but the poncey twat inside me wants to get some proper Road pedals even though I'm certain it will make no difference whatsoever!

They are a bargain.  I suspected they would come in a bag and be missing the cleats.  Nope, boxed and with cleats

Just shove on the 520's and do them up nice and tight, will feel pretty much the same as road ones as long as you've got relatively stiff shoes.

I have the 520s on both my MTB and roadie. Haven't noticed any downside to having them on either

You can get A540s, but they have the disadvantages of both road and MTB pedals with the advantages of neither!

Just use 520s, or get proper road shose and pedals.

IIRC, the road-style pedals with SPD (MTB) fixings are called A520s, whereas the SPD MTB pedals are the M520s (don't get confused with A530s - different again)......

 Or I might be wrong..

SPD R Road cleats are easier to walk on than SPD cleats on a road shoe.

Thats about the only difference I've found.

Probably worth having double sided mtb spd pedals on a roadbike for use in traffic anyway.

Difference between MTB and road is the platform size on a road pedal suppose to give better pedalling but as some one has already said if you have a stiff MTB shoe it is as good, maybe not as light. Up side you will be able to walk in them and an MTB shoe with MTB cleats is easier to get clipped in than a road shoe and [shimano] cleats.

Nope, it doesn't matter how stiff your shoes are there's a large difference between proper road pedals, whatever anyone says.

I've got S-Works road and MTB shoes, and there's a huge difference with the road ones, they feel substantially more stable.

That doesn't improve if you use A520s, but they're single sided so they're harder to clip into.

Just use M520s and have done with it.

I find its also easier to clip into a road pedal, the weight distribution of the pedal means its pretty much always in the right position, and the larger cleat just guides into place much better than any MTB pedal I have tried.

Can't say I've ever had any trouble clipping into the MTB shimano 520s, even when they're full of mud and grit.

I disagree with you there MSP, maybe it's all that hurried clipping in at the start of races, but with the exception of Look Quartz I've found every MTB pedal far easier to clip into than any road pedal.

Road ones have a very positive 'click' when you've clipped in, but you have to 'feel' for the pedal more than you do with an MTB pedal IME. But that's not a huge issue, how often do you really unclip on the road?!

I agree with everyone except those of you I don't agree with.   On the other hand I agree in part with what the majority say.

For those who care......I went for the same pedals as the ones on the mtb as none of the potential improvements from road pedals were worth the cost of a new set of shoes.

I am, after all, a bit of pikey.
