Got a problem my oldish manitou forks have corroded where the brake caliper bolts on, I didnt overtighten they have been in there years and when i took them out the thread came with the bolts.

Ive currenty got them workng a bit by usuing a fractionaly bigger bolt but dont know what to do to sort properly as they need adjusting

ideas?

Helicoils often get mentioned in this instance...

You had a good excuse to throw away some Blacks and you didn't? For shame.

One of the many problems with Manitous.

Until recently they were the only company to use post mount, the same thing may start happening to Rock Shox/Fox forks in 5 years once the bolts are nicely seized in.

oh well found someone who will stick helicoil in for a drink which is cool, tbh ive got no complaints with them, could do with something longer in the travel dept as on an inbred where as they used to be on my ultra lightweight xc race bike

Haha... Yeah they weren't exactly the best forks in the world, but they were only on a knockabout bike so they did me fine... I figured I'd just whack a helicoil into the post mount, bolt the brake back on and just run the things into the ground... They lasted another 9 months before they started to go tits-up which was quite impressive!

same happened with the other day with my manitou nixon super intrinsic i used quick steel to glue a piece of threaded bar in and just used the original washer and a nyloc nut works fine as a stud instead of a bolt

Karlos did this to his brand new marz forks.  Nowt wrong with the quality, he's just a hamfisted baffoon.

Helicoil sorted it

That is true, I am fcuked em' up good. Helicoil was spot on though.

I have since invested in a torque wrench, which I haven't used yet.

You can buy helicoils for between £20 and £25 on eBay. They come with 10 inserts but you can buy 25 for £5.

Helicoils are made of stainless steel, but that doesn't stop the electrolytic corrosion eating away at the alloy (fork leg in this case). They will eventually drop out if you let this happen and then the hole is too big to put in another insert. Despite helicoils being "self locking" it is wise to use a drop of Loctite 222 when fitting them as it stops this corrosion. This way you get a thread that will never strip or drop out for years.

Many years ago, I was out in the Derbyshire Peaks, when a gear cable came loose. You can guess what happened when I tightened it up again! I helicoil brand new components now as the thread is so strong, you will never ever mange to strip it.
