i've found a very short steep section to ride on a local trail, unfortunately the surface is very lose and dusty and both times down the back wheel has locked up with the slightest of braking and I've skidded my way to the bottom (obviously not helped with worn summer stylee tyres). I have my weight way back as theres a step into the section. Do i just live with the completely uncool slippy slidey to the bottom or are there other things I should be trying ?

Get off the brakes and pedal.

As MSP say's, that be about the best way to go at it, or a good jump of the step It's only really scary the first few times you do it. I ride alot on the old coal tips arounds my area, when dry the surface can be lethal, if you are gonna brake, try little squeezes on the brake instaed of holding on (much like an abs system on a car). i've found this technique usefull. Hope this helps a touch.

arse back and low, and angle your ankles down - both of these should move you weight lower and backward, hopefully meaning less skidding also don't be afraid to use the front brake along with the rear - will need practise...

 Loose not lose.

i was thinking of trying the brake pumping technique next time, full bore no brakes jump in would be fine (he says bravely ) if there wasn't a tree to manoeuvre round right after the step. Maybe I should drop a disc size or 2 !

we've a lot of loose sandy/rocky stuff on woodbury...either ride it flat out...(no good I ride hardtails) or gentle on the back brake and short stabs with the fronts. seems to get me round anyway.

I just use the back for balance and control and the front for holding your speed in check. When it's that steep your not gonna be able to slow down, the best you can do is feather the brakes to hold the same speed and stop it all running away from you. If it's so loose that you cant help locking up the back then just look on it as cutting in a new line.

I really like the feeling of the back end sliding out in loose steep sections.Weighting the pedals help with this.

Hoon, crash & burn, remount & ride on?
