Have been for a couple of rides on my new road bike and am really suffering from cramp/pain in my foot. Within 2 miles I am getting a really nasty pain on the outside edge and just underneath each foot, in the middle of the foot length. I have tweeked the cleats about, just been out again and still getting the pain. As I look at my feet in the pedals they look dead straight, I was always under the impression that they should dish in slightly at the toe. Cant seem to adjust them any further that way though. Also not at all confident with the Look pedals, I am finding them really hard to clip into at times as the pedal never sits flat like the Shimano ones on the MTB. I ended up in a heap in the road on my first outting as I ran out of momentum before I could get the foot in...not a good start! Is it worth going for a proper set up session at my LBS as I am not sure if my seatpost needs an inch taking off it too or just that I am being a bit of a coward with the new riding position?! On the plus side I am really chuffed with smoothness of the bike, I thought it would be like being flung down a cliff in a barrel for ride comfort. Once I am comfy and more confident I think I am going to really enjoy this roadie malarky! I also just got 2nods & a hello on my little jaunt! May have had something to do with the bra exposure due to ill fitting vest top but I'll take them anyway! Got sod all hellos on my MTB!

 Flatties?

 Do you have collapsed arches?

Sit on a desk or table and dangle your legs, that's the natural position your feet should be in, some people toe in ,some toe out, chances are that each foot will be slightly different, don't worry about it just get used to being a freak.

Moving the cleats as far back as they go will relieve tension in the arch of your foot. I generally ride flats and had to redrill the soles of my roadie shoes to get my foot as far forward on the pedal as I find comfortable - I don't like pedalling with my toes. As Monkey says dangle your legs but straighten them too. You'll no doubt find your toes rotate to the inside as you straighten you legs. I set the cleats nearer to where my foot is when my leg is at 150° than when it is at 90°.

As has been mentioned sitting on the edge of something and noting the way your feet dangle is how you want your feet angled when on the bike. I've experienced a similar issue and figured out it was because of my being a little too enthusiastic when tightening the straps on my shoes.

Thanks all will have a go at that. Straps thing may be the case too as I tend to do them up wuite tight as always paranoid they will slip off with my super human strength when surging up hills

Sorry to hear you have pain. I am not a runner but I have had this pain after walking. My guess is that you may have tendinitis/tendonitis. But get it checked out by your doctor. Try putting ice on it and do the RICE thing (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). Question: Have you been stretching after your workout? I get alot of calf pain that you described after cycling and sometimes I think it is because I forget to stretch. Take care and hope you feel better soon, Sonnyday
