Hi. I`m looking to change the chain ring on a 1990's Carrera bike.

From a brief inspection of the bike it looks as though the chainset is a single piece and what's more , the chainset would appear to be attached to the bikes crank.

To upgrade to a chainset , would I then have to replace the crank also?

There are no accessible screws or bolts on either side of the chainset.

Thanks.

A few piccies would help.

Lots of cheaper bikes of that vintage had rivetted-together chainsets, so the rings are, to all intents and purposes, non-replaceable. If you can't see any bolts to undo, chances are that that's what you have, so yes, you'll need to replace the crank arms as well. And you might as well put a new bottom bracket in while you're at it, I shouldn't think that's in particularly good shape by now.

That explains it, thanks for your help.
