I have decided as a wee winter project to restore an ' 95 Specialized Rockhopper - can I do  straight swap from centre pull to "v" brakes?

They have a different pull or something...I think if you put old caliper levers on V brakes they don't pull enough cable trough

Sorry i meant just can I swap the whole thing from centre pull to V brakes, do the "bosses" work on both types?

The mounts are the same for canti brakes as for V Brakes. What I'd call centre pull brakes mount to the mudguard hole directly above the tyre same as caliper brakes. Have you a photo of the brakes you've got? If the mounts are welded to the forks a little below the inside diameter of the rim they're pretty much certain to be correct. I have a 1989 Rockhopper, but I wouldn't dream of changing out the brakes for something new as it's a great reminder of how sketchy and fun MTBing was back in its infancy...

Oh Yeah...Old School MTB brake were Cantilevers not Calipers!

Photo not poss as I stripped the thing down, the actual brake levers (i.e. the bits attached to the bosses) looks very similar to the "v" but I can't find any reference to centre pull anywhere to buy - given I was using and abusing this thing up until this summer the brakes worked perfectly well so I may just clean them up and refit.

Sketchy and fun are certainly one way of describing old skool MTB's

I changed the canti's for V's on my old Trek & it worked fine - just had to change the cable routing a bit but then that's what zip ties were invented for isn't it?

Ah now it seems I may have go this wrong - the bike had canti's so thanks to the Pinkster.
