It doesn't help that to get a half decent light you're looking at about 40 quid up

Just looked on CRC, 20 quid buys a front & back adequate for commuting around town.

It annoys the hell out of me that folk'll spend that on their mobile phone contract for a month but it's too much for something that might save their life. "You've got lights on your car so you can be responsible for my safety".

Maybe the powers that be could put a £20 levy on all new bikes and insist that a pair of lights is supplied at point of sale. And some kind of law enforcement would be nice for a change...

grumf

Cops should have bike lights in the back of their cars...

Pull over for commiting an offence, pay a £50 fine on the spot and get given some lights of the ilk of the £9.99 front a rear halfords jobbies.

That would work. Well, it would if they we could convince the old bill that it's part of the job that we pay them to do... It could be an offence all done & dusted in five minutes, easy stats for the year-end targets too.

If they can't pay, confiscate mobile phone until they can, I guarantee they'll be round the cop shop first thing next day.

Another way, and again convincing the old bill it's aprt of their day job.

Stick a van full of lights and reflectors on a cycle commute route pull in anyone without lights...enforcing the law and giving out fines.

Ok so by my own admission I don't have them on my BMX and I'd be up for the fine too...but in my defence I don't ride along the roads on any bike.

This is a great idea Billy. Perhaps as well the Police could had out poo bags to dog walkers who forget them, provide a taxi service to anyone tempted to drink & drive and carry a boot full of spare wheels in case they find someone driving with a bald tyre.

My my, the options are endless...

;)

That's the spirit!

I expect the person tempted to drink drive to get their own taxi, I'd want the bald tyre driver to be nicked & towed and the PCSOs can deal with the doggy-do

How about umbrellas for passing rainshowers?

It's much the same as the fat useless wasters that you see on a certain type of TV program, they're claiming all the benefits that they can, haven't got a pot to piss in but they still manage to do 40 fags (that's cigarettes not some gay bashing game) a day and have the full Sky package!

And spend all day in the pub/bookies.

I don't have a front light at the moment due to it failing, have to send it back to cateye at some point.

But even then I barely used it on the bike cause of the stupid plastic strap, the thing would always point down so was useless.

Dar, I have one of those Cateye lights as a backup when I'm nightriding.  The strap is a bit of a pain but when it's done up properly it's super solid, very easy to mis feed the strap and lose the tightening effect of the lever though.

fair point mike, I might be doing it wrong allthough I don't have the instructions or anything anymore, bought it about 4 years ago and I've moved 3 times since then.

Play around with the way you thread the strap, you'll find that the lever is like a cam and tightens it.  Bloody crap design though.

WTF.

Feel the love.

Used to cycle to work along the A41 from Chester towards Hooton. I noticed that the police had taken to stopping cyclists without lights. I always used to enjoy these idiots having the coppers fingers being wagged at them.

As said these idiots give us all a bad name.
