Why is that some Hubs make a noise i.e.Hope/Chris King and some are silent i.e. Shimano?

 Different ratchet mechanisms. If you look at a King or Hope hub you will fully understand the noise they make. Not sure as to shy a shimano one is silent though. Surely something has to engage on way and 'slip' the other. Good question

 I was told that noisy is good! Probably the mech is chunkier and better able to stand the test of time.......unlike my DT Swiss which disintegrated after 1000 miles!

 Blimey - they're pretty pricey too!! PS. I'm thinking of a new rear wheel and someone has reccommended the new Stans ZTR hub. They reckon they're smoother, quieter and cheaper than the Hope. I've never seen the Stan's hub tested so I've no idea whether they're as long-lived as the Hope.

 Noisy Hope hubs like my Pro3's are great for clearing walkers off the trail well before you get to them. They're great for psyching out riders in front of you too.

Unless the rider in front's thinking "I'm gonna hold up shouty-hub-boy and his silly 'sounds like a 1950's football rattle' wheels"  I know Shimano hubs are quiet but none of mine have ever been 'silent'. Mavic freehubs are fairly quiet too but I guess they may just be Shimano ones attached to Mavic's hubs.

 Mavic freehubs are fairly quiet too but I guess they may just be Shimano ones attached to Mavic's hubs. I wish they were. Unfortunately they are Mavic's own and run on a plastic bush that leads to them sticking and wobbling before long. Pull a Shimano cassette body to bits and you'll find just two lightly sprung pawls separated by about 100° rather than opposite each other. They rarely break but the springs are so light they get rusted/gunged up. Taking the seal out of the back and adding light oil often gets them working again.
