What to look out for?

Hello to all.

I am on the Market for bike sat-nav, and would like it to be tom-tom* like easy to use. Those in the know, could you advice what features do I have to look for, as am completely unaware of bike-specific sat-navs. I am happy to pay top dollar (upto £300*) for system which I blindly could trust, as exploring terrains gives me buzz, not saying that I set trip without planning but some kind of features of which I could upload over I-net onto device and ready to go would be nice.

Thank you in advance for your info-help.

Are you serious?

The only one I can really think of (admittedly I'm not expert in this) is the Garmin Edge 705 with City Navigator, which is the same maps as the Garmin Nuvi sat-navs, it can do turn by turn directions on the road, or you can download maps offroad and follow a trace.

I'm pretty sure no one does a proper 'sat-nav' system with off road maps, although an increasing number of systems can show a decent base map with an overlaid route they can't tell you when to make turns and such.

If you just want something for navigation, then something like the garmin oregon now has full OS mapping. The edge has more bike related features, but the mapping isn't as good. You can use garmin Navigator maps with both for road route planning (can be good for getting back to the car).

Thanx for reply, can Oregon* be some kind of uploaded with maps from e-net or yourself can draw route you planned then just follow it? It's really new to me considering it's bike speccific. Wouldn't want waste hard earned cash for silly gimmicks.

at the moment, there is nothing that routeplans the way a car nav does off road, if you are going offroad the route needs to be preplanned, Personally I own a 705, but would buy an oregon toda.y

Most gps units can have routes uploaded using the gpx standard.

After some hours of lurking on e-net few systems came up ... Garmin edge* + Oregon* vs Satmap* . Pricewise they are the same , but given from reviews Satmap goes as an all rounder. From info I have seen, Garmin charge crazy premiums for extra additional pre-loaded maps of certain requested areas while satmap is on more reasonable side. Garmin edge do offer more gimmicks but am not Olympic athlete to use it, so guess it's just to cater for some taste. Have to admit ...os Topo maps looks the way to go on satmap* .Well, it's all confusing now but lucky I have time to decide. Is there anyone out there who did compare Satmap vs Garmins etc? For now will have to do with an I-phone apps.
