Since the winter night have been drawing in I've been trying to keep up what little fitness I developed over the summer by delving into the dark woods of Bristol. Just wondering what everyone out there is using. I'm looking for something around £30 as the £200 for the lunmicycle lights (which are absolutely brilliant) was shock enough the the bank account!

So you've got Lumi's ?? HID's or Halogens ?? mounted on your bars I presume and want some look around ability ??
1. why not mount a Lumi on your head ?? 2. No £30 Head mounted torch will do the job, £60 for the Silva L1 will do it nicely though. You need 3watts or above to cut it. 3. if you wait Silva LX 5watt £100 rechargeable batter, could be even better.

I've just picked up a Silva L1 Midnite from aboveandbeyond.co.uk for £49 (they are out of stock of the white L1's but the Midnites are same spec but black)

Hopefully have a new HID bulb soon, free :) then a 5hour battery to follow in a few weeks :)
I'll still have the L1 on the helmet to though, don't trust HID's that much.

CRC list a Cateye HT100 helmet light at £18.
It comes with a 6V 2.4W halogen bulb, but is upgradable to 10W.
Takes 5 C size batteries, so a 10W bulb would last almost 3 hours using 5000mAh rechargeables. Using an EverLED will run for over 24 hours!

Having just received a Silva L1 (Also from above and beyond) I have to say it puts any normal lighting set I've seen on a headband to shame.
It even Comes with a C cell holder for 4 cells extending it's range 300% apparently.
An absolute bargain in my humble opinion.

 Not range sadly, just runtme.
Run on the C's, and get the Memorex C's from Poundland I get 12hours outta them for £2 :) hence not needing rechargeable.

how easy is it to use the Silva L1 on a helmet?
Does it stick up a lot, dont want a snapped neck catching it on a tree!
But, it looks like it would do the trick power wise.

 |
mounts to the helmet pretty easily, just wrap the band around, and get it where you want it, secure the light unit on the helmet with a zip just in case it was to slip.
|
 |
I cant find a Silva web site to get more info, a bigger picture.
Dylan, what do you mean when you say "Not range sadly, just runtme." are you talking about the Silva?

silva.se website. Hi-Res L1 image link half way down the page.

ah, I see. The lamp bit itself pivots up and down. The battery packs are distributed around the side.
It always worries me having a light sticking up above my helmet, like a hook , just waiting to get caught on a tree! So this is probably a better design.
Ok, I'm gonna get one of these.

The C battery pack extends the run time of the unit by 300%, I typically get 12-14 hours out of a set of c batteries on full power. It doesn't extend the range of the lights, i.e. how far the beam travels.

I use lumicycle HID on helmet mount kit. As Dylan says, why not head mount yours?
IMHO if you only have one light its better mounted so that it points where you are looking and not where your bars are pointing.

dont want to spend that much money on a HID system.
I have a 12W+20W hologen NIMH system that is bar-mounted, but what a helmet light as well, and one that will be a great backup with long battery life and bright enough to see around corners on the trail.
Cabling is such that it would be tricky to have some on helmet as well, and I dont really like wires all over the place so prefer self-contained on helmet
hopefully the L1 will meet those requirements.

Check out the BLT T4 on CRC then, don't know if there in stock yet, helmet mountable all in 1, 4watt + 40% more via Over Volt so 5.5Watt ish kinda, 3hour run time, rechargable and all in 1 unit so no wires, and £100. ( claimed better reflector to )
But a Large Expensive object to bash on low branches.
( could be smaller than it looks )

its my neck I'm more concerned with - I would like to keep my head attached to my body by my neck!
Dont really wanna spend £100 - I'd probably buy an exposure joystick if I was going to spend some real money.
