i think this will be a great set of articles, showing how and what to do for all those people out there who want to build their own shiny bike, and we'll get to see if its possible to make a completly non-shimano bike.

thats a shame 3 bits of shimano crud!

NBT, maybe i should have put this in the beginners bit as i thought it would be good for begginers but it is about kit, so i just put it here.

On the subject of broken Trek OCLV's...

Me personaly - 2 under warranty in one year - gave up and bought something else.
Friend 1 - one under warranty - 4 years now, hardly rides.
Friend 2 - one under warranty - 3 years now, hardly rides.
Friend 3 - broke one - got a cheap replacement - 3 years now.
Friend 4 - three under warranty and still loving them.

Best hardtail I have ever ridden - just seem a bit (shall we say) delicate. My Aluminium Trek has the same geometry and is 2 years old (happy birthday).

PS - My father (Him) has an STP and he loves it.

Wow Ok take that unbreakable bit back.
Still nice to know that god rides an STP ;-)

Are you building the wheels yourself too, Scoop? I did that on my build up, leaving installing headset cups as the only shop bit.

Though admittedly after that bout of smugness, I do have a full Shimano drivetrain.
