I'm suffering a painful right knee joint. Its has got worse in the last 12 mths. I was using flat pedals and the problem started to occur (usually after 2+hrs in the saddle). Switched to spd's recently to try to shift the problem-no good. I've seen the Specialized ads for BG shoes which lean your feet outwards slightly to keep the knee joint in the correct shape (I get pain at the outside of the joint which seems to get better if I lean my feet that way). Anyone got any ideas, suggestions or tried Spec BG shoes?
I used to get a painful knee too as a result of surgery in the past. I ride now with BG shoes on Crank Bros egg beater pedals (plenty of float and easy disengagement) and have had no problems since changing. It's also worth making sure that your seat height and position is spot on to avoid over extending the leg and putting extra strain on your knee joint
Move to Time' or Crank bros. I started getting dreadful knee pain while riding with spd's because my riding style is such that I wasn't able to get them set up properly.
Since moving to times I have had no such problems, and would now never go back. Having heard similar thoughts from mates it is definitely worth looking into before you let your knee get any worse.
BTW, have got some of the BG shoes and while they are very comfy, I haven't noticed any significant repositioning of my feet......think it might be a good marketing spin
BG shoes are great, i can actually fit into them! THey reduced my shoe size by 2 european sizes (48 down to 46) with no squahing. Basically my archs have collapsed a bit which means the extra support lifts my arch and shortens my foot. Also had no knee problems since having them..... not thought of that as a reason, just thought my knees had fixed as hadn't ridden for 4 months!
Thanks for that Leftover. I am in the market for some new shoes, and as I suffer with pronation(sp) from being stupid and doing lots of 10k runs. I should have stuck to just riding my bike. My arches started to collapse and I also have some pain behind my knee in the outer tendon area after about 2 hours on the bike. BTW are the shoes also a bit wider as most shoes pinch my feet.
Got the aforementioned. Mega comfy shoes (got the Spec Sport ones and Time XS pedals from Worcester Cycle Centre-top deal!!). First ride out and no pain whatsoever from the offending knee joint!!!!
The other one's mashed to buggery though!! Couldnt get out of the pedals and landed on a rock. Bloody typical!! I will update soon.
